The rise of mass media, technological advances, and availability of scientific and medical knowledge have altered our perspective on death, immortality, and memory. Digital imaginings of the afterlife, "cemetery" installations, and communicating with the deceased using AI are a part of our reality now. All these phenomena can and should be studied not just by narrowly-specialized experts — we all have pondered over these complex ideas and struggled to find the answer.

Afterlife Lab is a cross-disciplinary course for anyone who wishes to dive deeper in the cultural aspects of death, the possibilities of immortality, and the preservation of memory through the means of research and art. The course welcomes all university staff and students; it suits both natural science researchers and humanities and art experts.

Goals

  • Familiarize a wider audience with death and memory studies for methodology on studying death, dying, immortality, and memory using interdisciplinary approaches;
  • Teach students the basics of art therapy to apply for professional and personal purposes.

Assignments

  • A tour of a historical cemetery;
  • Analysis of artistic works and mass culture products that reflect on memory and immortality;
  • Discussion of domestic and international experience in representing the concepts of death and immortality in academic work and applied projects;
  • Journaling to process emotions, feelings, and more.
Afterlife Lab is not just a theoretical course; it’s a true practical laboratory. In this course, students explore the fundamental principles and tools behind art therapy to apply for personal and professional goals, as well as master some methods, both analog and digital, used by scientific and technological artists: namely, 3D modeling, decellularization, сyanotype, glitch art, and more.

By the end of this course, students will learn to create artistic studies and/or projects not only for personal purposes but also to be exhibited at contemporary art exhibitions. As your final project, you’ll reflect on immortality and memory using the course’s practices and knowledge; the goal of this assignment is to let students express their personal experience through scientific, creative, and artistic tools.

Social media plays a major role in our life. We write posts, share our opinions, and leave reviews on products we purchase — all this provides valuable information to analyze. If you're searching for a product to buy, a system of automatic review analysis will help you make the right decision. You can also learn more about other people’s opinions on a certain situation and learn what people on social media are feeling — all with the help of such a system.

Are you wondering how many likes and shares you’ll get on social media? The automatic system can give an answer to that, too. And such a system is not hard to build. In this course, we examine the stages of machine learning and create a system to classify popular posts step by step. You can then use this knowledge for other tasks, such as analyzing the comments for toxicity or evaluating the tones of reviews.
